Tobias Nehrbass

Tobias Nehrbass, furniture dealer and manufacturer, Hartford. The furniture business was begun in 1866, and the factory in 1868; commenced manufacturing coffins in the spring of 1875. The business was conducted by Mr. Nehrbass alone till March, 1881, when he took in Fred Kreisser as partner. A 12-horse-power engine is used, and six men employed; about $8,000 worth of stock is manufactured annually. Mr. Nehrbass is the son of Christian and Elizabeth Nehrbass; was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, May 14, 1841; came to America in 1855, made his home in the town of Scott, Sheboygan Co., where he lived one year; then moved to West Bend, where he learned the cabinet-maker's trade, working three years; he then spent several years in traveling and working in various cities as a journeyman. He was married Nov. 3, 1863, at Hartford, to Miss Sabina Schroeder, daughter of John and Sophia Schroeder. Mrs. Nehrbass was born in Hess-Darmstadt, Germany. They have three children-Tobias, Herman and Eva.
