“History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, Wisconsin,” published in 1881 by Western Historical Company. Joseph Schwartz, farmer, Sec. 19; P. O. Hartford; has a farm of 224 acres; is a native of Prussia, the son of Peter and Anna Schwartz, and was born Nov. 9, 1838. He came to America, with his parents, in 1854, and directly to Wisconsin; located on Sec. 16, town of Hartford; he enlisted at the first call for troops, in the late war, April, 1861, Co. C, 1st W. V. I.; served the term of his enlistment; then returned home and resumed farming till 1864, August, when he re-enlisted for one year, Co. G, 45th W. V. I., and served till the close of the war. He was married, June 25, 1873, at St. Lawrence, to Miss Anna Sell, daughter of John Sell. Mrs. Schwartz was born in the town of Addison; they have had five children, of who four are living-John, Peter, Barbara (died when 1 ½ years of age), Mary and Joseph.
